INDUSTRY VS ENVIRONMENT (INTRODUCTION)

HOW CAN THE INDUSTRIAL AGRICULTURE AFFECT THE ENVIRONMENT?

Source: https://youtu.be/Nkp79bliBl0

The industry is an economic field that produces goods for the economic development of the country. According to Muray Brayce (1960), the notion of the industry can be described in two forms. In the narrow sense, industry means a development in the industrial sector, while in the broadest sense, the industry is defined as the development of infrastructures such as power stations and transportation facilities. This is because the absence of such facilities makes modern industry impossible to create. In line with the country's economic development, many industrial sectors have been opened. Among them is industrial agriculture. Industrial agricultural plays an important role in the economy country through its contribution to national income and turnover exports and job creation. This sector is a supplier of main food as well as raw materials for resource-based industries.

However, the opening of the agricultural industry can harm the environment. What is meant by the environment? the environment is a geographical term of philosophical doctrine that emphasizes the physical aspects of the environment such as the climatic conditions of the world concerning human activities. (A. Bullock & O.Stallybrass, 1997).

The environment is divided into four components. The first component is the biosphere component which is life such as humans, animals, and plants. The second component is the lithosphere which refers to the outer layer of the earth which is very solid and forms the land area ofthe continents and islands and the ocean floor. The third component is the hydrosphere which includes lakes, seas, swamps, ponds, and rivers and the last component is the atmosphere which is the layer of air found around the earth.

The growing activity of the agricultural industry has harmed all four components of the environment.

INDUSTRY VS ENVIRONMENT (IMPACT)

THE IMPACT OF INDUSTRIAL AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES ON THE ENVIRONMENT

"We won't have a society if we destroy the environment"

Margaret Mead -

1. Air Pollution And Haze Occur

Air pollution and haze can occur due to the release of air pollutants such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and so on from agricultural industry plants. In addition, the release of suspended particles (PM 10) in the atmosphere such as smoke, dust, and dust can cause the occurrence of haze. The release of smoke containing these pollutants can cause acid rain where the process of condensation of water vapor with pollutants in the air causes acid rain.

2. Water Pollution Occurs

Water pollution occurs due to the release of toxic waste or sludge by factories into surface water sources such as rivers, lakes, ponds, swamps, and the sea. This pollution of toxic waste and sewage waste causes the quality of clean water to be affected and causes the rate of BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) in the water to increase. The river will become murky, discolored, foul-smelling, and toxic. In addition, e-coli bacteria increase due to sewage sludge, suspended solid waste and so on which eventually cause aquatic life such as fish, shrimp, crabs, and aquatic weeds to be endangered and in turn to die.

3. There Is A Local Warming Event

The presence of air pollutants in the atmosphere released by smoke from agricultural industry factories will trap the earth's heat. The earth’s temperature index will increase due to the increase in the high concentration of carbon in the atmosphere released by agricultural factories. This gas allows the sun's heat to penetrate it but prevents the re-release of the earth's heat into the atmosphere. This causes heat to be trapped in the earth and local warming to take place. The heat released by generators and machines from the factory also causes local heating. Therefore, the effects of local warming or microclimate warming will occur in the industrial area.

4. Noise And Odor Pollution Occurs

This pollution occurs due to noise coming from a factory generator that operates emitting vibrations between 60 to 70 dBA. These factory generators and machines often emit very noisy noises due to the combination of noise from various sources to carry out the process of agricultural materials. Odor pollution comes from the products or waste of foul-smelling factories such as rubber processing factories, pineapple processing factories, and oil palm processing factories that dump sewage waste products into the river water. This foul smell will disturb the comfort of the surrounding residents.

5. Soil Contamination Occurs

This pollution is caused by the illegal disposal of hazardous factory waste by factories causing the soil to become acidic. Industries that illegally dump factory waste in remote areas will cause soil pollution. The quality of groundwater resources is also affected through the leaching process of factory waste when heavy rains occur. This will endanger the plants, animals, and humans that use the land area.

6. Environmental Pollution Or Garbage Occurs.

In pollution occurs as a result of the disposal of solid waste and garbage from industrial plants. This will lead to the dumping of garbage in the area around the factory. For example, the disposal of factory waste not in a designated waste disposal area will cause environmental pollution. This waste disposal can also be a place for the spread of dangerous diseases such as dengue and cholera. This is said so because the garbage that causes stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes. Dengue fever is spread through the bite of Aedes mosquitoes.

7. The Occurrence Of Acid Rain Phenomenon

The phenomenon of acid rain occurs when pollutant gases released by smoke from industrial plants such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and carbon dioxide can act as a condensation nucleus. Then, these pollutant gases will combine with water vapor in the air and will fall as acid rain. Acid rain causes plants and animals as a source of food and protein supply to humans to die and be destroyed.

INDUSTRIAL VS ENVIRONMENT (CLOSING)

 CLOSING

In conclusion, environmental conservation and preservation measures need to be tightened to ensure that the activities of this industry do not have a severe impact on the environment. Detailed monitoring of industrial factories must be done to ensure that these factories comply with the factory establishment standards that have been set. The installation of filters in the chimney can reduce the occurrence of air pollution. Akta Kualiti Alam Sekitar (1974) needs to be tightened so that the environment is always maintained from time to time. We as human beings with good minds need to cooperate with the government to preserve and care for the environment. Hopefully, in this way, the environment will always be preserved.
